Overview

Apex freshwater predator found in lakes, slow-flowing river systems and canals in the UK. Prefers clear water systems with lots of vegetation to hide amongst when hunting fish, amphibians and even small mammals and birds. Long and narrow with a tapered head; individuals have large eyes which aid in their hunting method. The marking patterns on each individual are unique and provide effective camouflage when waiting out prey.

Sampling Advice

  • Avoid stepping into the water – this can stir up sediment, throwing up sediment DNA and any inhibitory molecules present. Sediment may clog the filter and prevent sufficient volumes of water being filtered.
