Apex freshwater predator found in lakes, slow-flowing river systems and canals in the UK. Prefers clear water systems with lots of vegetation to hide amongst when hunting fish, amphibians and even small mammals and birds. Long and narrow with a tapered head; individuals have large eyes which aid in their hunting method. The marking patterns on each individual are unique and provide effective camouflage when waiting out prey.
Can be surveyed all-year-round. Optimally surveyed between March and October with spawning occurring between March and May.
