Overview

Burrow more than Signal crayfish, Dark red in colour with a covering of red spots and a black stripe on the top of its abdomen, this species of crayfish are also carriers of the crayfish plague, and are known to outcompete other, smaller crayfish species such as the white-clawed crayfish. They create extensive burrows, even more frequent and complex compared to signal crayfish, and this causes serous damage to river banks. The have a high fecundity and can lay up to 600 eggs at once, but reproduction does not occur under 10°C

Sampling Advice

  • Vital that biosecurity is taken into account in survey design as there is the potential that individuals may be infected with crayfish plague. Thoroughly disinfect all footwear/waders and equipment before entering the sampling site or moving between sites.
