Bat Species Identification Service from droppings

A robust method has been set up and automated to allow for competitive pricing of bat dropping analysis. Based in Derby, UK means getting samples to us is easy. Analysis has never been so advanced yet so cost effective due to recent advancements in DNA analysis.

These are the sequence of events to analyse a dropping:

  1. Sample Collection

Our Bat collection kits can be ordered here to ensure accurate results. Eppendorfs include a DNA preservative to make sure the sample does not degrade anymore from the point of collection. The kit includes getting the kits to you as well as return delivery back to the laboratory so is a popular cost effective choice. We send the kit out next day if ordered before 1pm and the kit contains everything you need to collect potential bat droppings without getting contaminated or inconclusive results. These kits have a 2 year expiry meaning that you can stock the kits up to be used as required.

Or if you’d prefer you can collect samples using your own equipment and send them in to us. However, if you choose this option please send samples in with this form here completed.

  1. Sample receipt to the laboratory and booking in

As soon as the samples are received at our laboratory in Morley, Derbyshire, UK, they are unpacked, stored at the correct temperature to limit sample degradation and booked in where you receipt a sample receipt email letting you know the samples have been received and when to expect the report.

  1. DNA Extraction

The samples start the laboratory analysis, breaking up the dropping sample and extracting as much DNA out of the sample as possible.

  1. Amplification

Short fragments of mitochondrial bat DNA are amplified by PCR (polymerase Chain Reaction)

  1. Purification and Genetic Sequencing

Samples are purified, DNA concentrations controlled and the genetic sequence is obtained

  1. Interpretation

The genetic code, which is unique to each and every species, is cross referenced to a huge database with millions of entries to establish what species of bat is present.

  1. Verification and Reporting

The results are entered in to a report, checked by a supervisor and sent via email in pdf format. The report will look similar to this report here.

Bat Species Detectable- All 17 UK breeding and more

The analysis will also distinguish between similar species of bat such as Alcathoe, Brandt’s and Whiskered in the Small Myotis family.

Alcathoe bat- Myotis alcathoe

Barbastelle- Barbastella barbastellus

Bechstein’s bat- Myotis bechsteinii

Brandt’s bat- Myotis brandtii

Brown long-eared bat- Plecotus auritus

Common pipistrelle- Pipistrellus pipistrellus

Daubenton’s bat- Myotis daubentonii

Greater horseshoe bat- Rhinolophus ferrumequinum

Grey long-eared bat- Plecotus austriacus

Leisler’s bat- Nyctalus leisleri

Lesser horseshoe bat- Rhinolophus hipposideros

Nathusius’ pipistrelle- Pipistrellus nathusii

Natterer’s bat- Myotis nattereri

Noctule- Nyctalus noctula

Serotine- Eptesicus serotinus

Soprano pipistrelle- Pipistrellus pygmaeus

Whiskered bat- Myotis mystacinus

Due to the robustness of the service, the analysis will also detect rarities and vagrants such as Greater mouse-eared bat; Myotis myotis, Kuhl’s pipistrelle;Pipistrellus kuhlii, parti-coloured bat;Vespertilio murinus. If the droppings are from another species such as a mouse or bird, the results may detect this though not guaranteed to as the chemistry is tailored to the bats above.

Development of the Bat Species Identification Service

Hundreds of fecal samples were collected directly from handled bats and placed straight in to eppendorf tubes and labelled. A large collection of droppings were collected from one captive Lesser Horseshoe Bat for analysis optimisation. Droppings from all 17 breeding species of UK bat were collected to verify the service. Trials were also run in parrell measuring the effects of collecting samples in Eppendorf tubes, Eppendorf tubes with silica beads and Eppendorf tubes containing a DNA preservative. The results strongly indicate that the was least sample degradation for samples that were preserved in the DNA preservative. 39 samples were analysed using a blind trial and gave 100% correct results.
